Dear Sir / Madam,
Clonmel Gardai in association with the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau are hosting a Fraud and Cyber Crime Prevention Seminar at Clonmel Park Hotel on Tuesday 25th February 2020 from 10am to 1pm.
Detective Chief Superintendent Pat Lordan and Detective Superintendent Michael Cryan from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau will be in attendance and will give a presentation to those present.
Fraud and Cyber Crime is now being committed more and more throughout the country and indeed Tipperary Garda Division. There are at least 4 types of such crime which fall under that category on a regular basis which are as follows:
Business email compromise (invoice redirect) where the criminal (purporting to be the debtor) contacts a business informing them of an outstanding invoice for payment. They advise the business that they have changed their bank account details and convinces the business to transfer the amount owned online to a new bank account (which is obviously the criminals’ bank account). Crimes of this type have occurred several times in Co. Tipperary.
Advanced fee fraud (online unsecure loans) where a person who is financially distressed seeks money from a finance company online. The online financial company (the criminal) advises the applicant via online that they will grant their application for the loan once a percentage of the loan being applied for has been paid to an online account. The applicant then submits a deposit online and obviously never receives the money. Again crimes of this type have occurred several times in Co. Tipperary.
Phishing bank accounts where the criminal contacts an account holder informing the account holder that they may be an issue or problem with their account and attempts to advise them over the phone regarding their account. Whilst this is in process the criminal is obviously phishing money from one’s account. Again crimes of this type have occurred several times in this county targeting all age groups, especially the elderly.
Romance fraud is where individuals interact online relationships over a period of time which results in the criminal seeking money online from the individual. The criminal often uses distressed tactics or the suggestion that they are going to travel to Ireland to meet the individual. They convince the individual online to forward cash to their account which is obviously the criminals’ account. Again crimes of this type have occurred in Co. Tipperary.
From investigating the above-mentioned crimes it is clear to me that these crimes target businesses, organisations and individuals. No business or individual is immune to such crime.
I would encourage either yourself or members of your business or organisation and individuals to attend this seminar as I believe it would be worthwhile in an attempt to reduce this type of crime. The seminar will commence at 10am with tea and coffee with the presentation to commence at 10:30am. The presentation will last from 10:30am to 1pm.
